Adobe previews new Photoshop feature that uses AI to select subjects

While Photoshop users have gotten pretty damn good at masking humans and other subjects over the years, it still remains one of the most tedious tasks in the app. But the days of Magic Wand masking will soon be over.
Adobe today teased an upcoming feature that uses AI to identify and automatically mask subjects in the image. The feature is called Select Subject and it uses Adobe’s AI platform, Sensei.
From the “Select and Mask” menu, simply click anywhere on the image and it will automatically identify and select the various subjects in the image. From there, the same tools to change the background or edit the subject are available.
Adobe teased the feature in a video, saying that it will be available in the next iteration of Photoshop.
That said, there’s no timeline for Photoshop future releases.
As Engadget notes, the Select Subject tool isn’t perfect and still has some trouble identifying fine details like strands of hair, but it should get better over time as the machine learning algorithm takes in more data.

Photoshop uses AI to make selecting people less of a hassle

The tech is powered by Adobe’s AI platform, Sensei. “Complicated details around the subject aren’t an issue, because this feature is using machine learning to recognize the objects,” Adobe Photoshop Product Manager Meredith Payne Stotzner says in the YouTube video (below). During the demo, she uses it select a single person on the street, a group of volleyball players, a couple on the beach and a red panda.
In some cases, details like hair and fur aren’t properly selected, but using the tool would certainly give you a big head start. It pretty much eliminates the tedious hand-drawn or tweaked masking process, letting you focus on the fine details. Since it uses machine learning tech, it should also get better over time.
There are already plenty of Photoshop plugins like Akvis SmartMask and Fluid Mask that can do something similar to Select Subject. However, it’ll be nice to have such a feature as part of Photoshop, rather than paying extra for a plugin. And the new feature is more than just a technology “sneak” — it’s an actual feature coming in a future Photoshop build. Adobe has yet to say exactly when it’ll arrive, however.

Adobe’s upcoming Photoshop CC update will select your subject automatically

Adobe has published a sneak peek video of a new feature that will make a lot of photographers happy. In an upcoming update of Photoshop CC, the selection process will become much easier. As a matter of fact, it will take you just one click to get the starting selection of your subject. Meet the Select Subject feature.
No matter which selection method you use, it’s still a painstaking process with some photos. Select Subject is an AI-powered feature, using their Adobe Sensei technology. The selections may still require some effort to get it done perfectly. But for that starting selection, the Select Subject Tool does a pretty good job:
It’s interesting that the feature works even if your photo has multiple subjects:

You can also use it in the Select and Mask workspace, so you can refine the mask edge:

This feature is designed to simplify the workflow of photographers and make it faster and more efficient. You can see in the demonstration video above how it works, and how close it gets to the perfect selection. Adobe hasn’t announced yet when exactly the Select Subject feature will be available. But whenever it happens, we’ll let you know. And we’ll all be waiting anxiously.
